Q. HOW DO I TELL IF I HAVE SPEECH RECOGNITION INSTALLED ON MY COMPUTER, AND HOW DO I CONFIGURE MY MICROPHONE AND TRAIN THE SPEECH ENGINE?
A. Open the Control Panel and Look for “Speech.” In the Speech Properties Tab displayed below, under Language, you need to have one of the following:
Microsoft English Recognizer v5.1 (Preferred Choice for SpeakToText and Speak-to-Mail)
Microsoft English Recognizer v5.0 (Comes with Office XP)
Microsoft English Recognizer v6.0 (Comes with Office 2003)
To configure the microphone, select the “Configure Microphone” button in the lower right and follow the instructions. It’s best to do this before training the speech engine.
To train the speech engine, we recommend you create a new profile (the “New” button under the heading Recognition Profiles). Then follow the instructions. One training session is adequate for trying the product. Optimal accuracy is achieved with three or more sessions.
For best results with accuracy, you need to use a high quality noise cancellation headset microphone. If you do not have one, you can buy one on our website that has been tested with our products.
DO NOT EXPECT GOOD RESULTS (MEANING HIGH ACCURACY) WITH SPEECH RECOGNITION IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE CORRECT KIND OF MICROPHONE AND YOU HAVE NOT CONFIGURED IT OR HAVE NOT INVESTED THE TIME TO TRAIN THE SPEECH ENGINE. WE CANNOT STRESS THIS POINT ENOUGH. CUSTOMERS WHO FOLLOW THESE STEPS ARE ALMOST ALWAYS SATISFIED USING OUR PRODUCTS.
Q. I HAVE OFFICE XP OR OFFICE 2003, BUT I DON’T HAVE THE REQUIRD SPEECH ENGINE LISTED UNDER SPEECH PROPERTIES. HOW DO I INSTALL SPEECH RECOGNITION?
A. Start your Office installation CD and in features, look for “Alternative User Input.” Select and install the speech option.
Q. IF I DO NOT HAVE SPEECH RECOGNITION ON MY COMPUTER, CAN I STILL USE THE TRIAL VERSION OF SPEAKTOTEXT AND SPEAK-TO-MAIL?
A. Yes. You can try all the features of the program using your mouse and keyboard, but the program will not work with speech recognition. You can experience all the features, and get a good idea of the functionality of a speech-enabled version of the program so you can make an informed decision about buying our products.
Q. WHY IS SPEECH RECOGNITION NOT INCLUDED IN THE TRIAL VERSION?
A. There are two reasons for this:
First: In order to succeed in using any speech recognition product, one needs to invest the time to train the speech engine to recognize his or her voice, learn how to use the product, and to adapt to using speech recognition. Without taking these important steps, speech recognition does not work well, and potential customers tend to blame it on the product. Our experience shows that users who purchase the product are more likely to invest the time needed to succeed with it. SpeakToText and Speak-to-Mail are excellent products that function very well when used correctly.
Second: Including the speech recognition engine in the trial version would result in a large download that would drastically increase the cost of our bandwidth. We would then have to charge more for our products to offset the cost. Instead, we choose to keep the cost down for our customers who buy our speech recognition products.
